Do This, Feel Better: Go Take a Photo

It’s not just about going and taking a photo. In fact, there is a good chance that you’ll never look at 99% of the shots you’ll end up taking. It’s about getting up from your desk, unhooking yourself from whatever daily routine you’ve got, and taking the chance to have a fresh perspective on what you see.

Even then, you don’t have to travel to wild and exotic locations to take amazing pictures. Find new and interesting ways to see the world you’ve already got around you. Perhaps you can start out by Instagramming pictures of your food. Everyone else does. It’s easy. I’ll often do it whenever a plate of tasty deliciousness is placed in front of me. Maybe I’ll never look at that picture again– so what? For a moment, I honored something in front of my with my full attention. I framed it, found the best angle to see it from, enjoyed what I considered to be it’s perfect beauty, and then proceeded to insert that beauty into my body bite by bite.

Those few precious seconds (or minutes or hours or whatever period of time ) you spend honoring the subject of your focus is a celebration of full attention. That ceremony, no matter how long or short, means you spent time thoughtfully responding to a stimuli rather than unconsciously reacting to it. You took normal and made it art. Good on you, intrepid yogi!

Please, don’t spend all of your time taking photos of your food. It’s a great place to start, so make sure you that intention and focus it elsewhere. Photography is a great way to show people how you see the world, and there is a whole lot of world to be seen. Get up, get out, and don’t be afraid to celebrate your life with a few amazing pictures from time to time. You might actually start seeing your “normal” in a whole different light.
